A Critical Bottleneck
One of our key clients in the laser systems sector faced a critical bottleneck. They needed a prototype for a new high-power optical housing component, but the design involved extremely tight tolerances of ±0.005mm. The material specified was Inconel 718—a superalloy known for its high strength and resistance to heat, but notoriously difficult to machine due to rapid work hardening. Their previous supplier had failed to meet the surface finish requirements, leading to project delays.
Our Solution
At JXL, we approached this challenge with a comprehensive DFM (Design for Manufacturability) review.
- Tooling Strategy: We utilized specialized carbide end mills designed specifically for high-temperature alloys to minimize tool wear.
- Process Optimization: We implemented a multi-pass strategy to manage heat generation effectively, ensuring the material properties remained stable.
- Quality Control: Every part was inspected using our CMM (Coordinate Measuring Machine) to verify geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
The Result
We delivered the first batch of prototypes within 2 weeks—ahead of schedule. The parts passed all stress tests with zero rejections. This success not only saved our client’s project timeline but also secured us a long-term contract for their mass production phase.
